Media entrepreneur Chude Jideonwo has sparked discussion by noting the significant presence of Yoruba filmmakers in Nigeria’s film industry. In a social media post, Jideonwo shared his observations on how Yoruba creators are leading the way in both local cinema and on international streaming platforms.

He highlighted filmmakers such as Kemi Adetiba, Toyin Abraham, Kunle Afolayan, Funke Akindele, Mo Abudu, and Femi Adebayo, emphasizing their consistent ability to produce films that resonate with a wide audience. According to him, Yoruba-language films are increasingly found on platforms like Netflix and Amazon, while Hausa and Igbo-language movies remain less visible. Jideonwo pointed out that the Yoruba film culture has blended into the broader Nigerian cinematic landscape, shaping much of the content that reaches global audiences. He cited examples like Jagun Jagun and Beast of Two Worlds as successful films that reflect this trend.

He also noted that, outside of Genevieve Nnaji’s Lionheart, there have been very few Hausa or Igbo-language films that have made it to global streaming platforms. Jideonwo’s comments highlight the evolving dynamics within Nigeria’s film industry, where Yoruba filmmakers appear to be setting the pace for mainstream success. Click here to watch
